چکیده

A method for estimating sperm whale abundance in an acoustic line-transect survey with a two-element hydrophone is described. The analysis starts from the point where set of click trains have been identified by analyst. Using likelihood methods, description given estimation each train (i) positions bearing patterns trains, (ii) most likely numbers whales aggregations and (iii) radial detection function based on times detected clicks estimated position. uses complete allowable arrangements these into different whales. number potentially very large yet can be computed because many combinations are not permissible, e.g. overlapping cannot same whale. It suggested that could work well over perpendicular distances near-certain i.e. strip transect survey. applied to data western Mediterranean. Simulations support width 5km. Some shortcomings areas further development discussed.

Zigzag transect survey by towed passive acoustic method for finless porpoise in the Yangtze River

Accurate estimation of abundance is one of the most important tasks for conservation and management of the endangered species. However, the population estimation of cetaceans in riverine systems is difficult due to the limited cruise course restricted by shallow water and ship lanes. In the present study, we conducted a zigzag survey trial with towed acoustic system in the main stem of the Yang...

Male sperm whale acoustic behavior observed from multipaths at a single hydrophone.

Sperm whales generate transient sounds (clicks) when foraging. These clicks have been described as echolocation sounds, a result of having measured the source level and the directionality of these signals and having extrapolated results from biosonar tests made on some small odontocetes. The authors propose a passive acoustic technique requiring only one hydrophone to investigate the acoustic b...

Tracking sperm whale (Physeter macrocephalus) dive profiles using a towed passive acoustic array.

A passive acoustic method is presented for tracking sperm whale dive profiles, using two or three hydrophones deployed as either a vertical or large-aperture towed array. The relative arrival times between the direct and surface-reflected acoustic paths are used to obtain the ranges and depths of animals with respect to the array, provided that the hydrophone depths are independently measured. ...

Passive acoustic monitoring using a towed hydrophone array results in identification of a previously unknown beaked whale habitat.

Beaked whales are diverse and species rich taxa. They spend the vast majority of their time submerged, regularly diving to depths of hundreds to thousands of meters, typically occur in small groups, and behave inconspicuously at the surface. These factors make them extremely difficult to detect using standard visual survey methods. However, recent advancements in acoustic detection capabilities...

Using a coherent hydrophone array for observing sperm whale range, classification, and shallow-water dive profiles.

Sperm whales in the New England continental shelf and slope were passively localized, in both range and bearing, and classified using a single low-frequency (<2500 Hz), densely sampled, towed horizontal coherent hydrophone array system. Whale bearings were estimated using time-domain beamforming that provided high coherent array gain in sperm whale click signal-to-noise ratio. Whale ranges from...
